Dorothy Love Coates - The Kingdom Of Babylon Is Falling Down
Dorothy Love Coates - A City Build Four Square
One of the longest standing and most succesful gospel singers who never crossed over to secular music is Dorothy Love Coates. Born and raised in Birmingham, Alabama, she was one of the first and one of the most dedicated of all (gospel) singers to actively and openly support the civil rights movement. Her dedication to this good cause remained a part of her life right till the end. One other thing which never left her was the raw power of her voice. On "The Kingdom Of Babylon Is Falling Down" she sings lead with Lillian Caffey. The song is taken from her 1978 album "A City Build Four Square" (Savoy LP 14500). Besides Lillian Caffey, other members of the Dorothy Love Coates Singers at the time of this recording were: Mary Odum, Debra Nunn, Gwen Moore-McKinney, Everlyn Thurman and Booker Sedecor.
I just found out about your blog and I see that I missed some fantastic music! "Seventies" gospel is the best gospel, period! I try to explain that to the young folks but they are convinced that gospel is no good unless it has a hip-hop beat or the singer is going into histrionics. I watch the gospel award shows and I just don't get it. The songs are so flat and uninspired, the singers are insincere and the whole thing is slick and overproduced. Blech!
Anyway, is there anyway to convince you to put together a one-shot compilation of the songs that you have posted? If that's too many, maybe a series of one-shots? Purty please?
