Five Singing Sons - Pouring Water On A Drowning Man

Five Singing Sons - Pouring Water On A Drowning Man

The Five Singing Sons came from South Carolina and recorded four albums for AIR. Unlike most AIR albums who lack real instruments, The Five Singing Sons are backed by 5 real musicians. Their version of "Pouring Water On A Drowning Man" is meandering somewhere between southern soul and gopsel. Not a bad place to be in 1984 when this was recorded.
"Pouring Water On A Drowning Man" is the title track of their AIR album (AIR LP 10085). Members of the Five Singing Sons are: Curtis Young, Jessie Jeffcoat, Henry Young, Charlie Williams and Terry Williams.

Yikes! That's a GREAT one, Cies. Interesting to compare this version with James Carr's, which clearly is the inspiration. The lead singer here sounds a good deal like James. Terrific southern soul. Thanks!

Great song, the first name that came to mind was Joe Simon, but I agree sounds like James Carr to

This is a very good rendition of the song.
To be honest, however, the version sounds a little too much like James Carr.
My all time favorite cover of this song is by Percy Sledge who, in my opinion, did even a better job than James Carr.

If the leadsinger of the Five Singing Sons ever reads that he is compared with guys like James Carr, Joe Simon and Percy Sledge he must feel really proud. I think he deserves it. The thing that surprises me the most when listening to all these unknown gospel singers is that a lot of them are as good if not better singers than their better known soul singing colleagues.
