Albertina Walker & the Caravans - Crying In The Streets
Albertina Walker & the Caravans - Crying In The Streets
The Caravans were one of the most popular groups in gospel history and what is perhaps even more astonishing the Caravans was the starting place for many great solo singers. Albertina Walker recruited amongst others through the years: James Cleveland, Inez Andrews, James Herndon, Bessie Griffin, Casietta George, Loleatta Holloway and Dorothy Norwood, just to name the best known Caravans alumni. And with such female singers Walker didn't sing much lead after the beginning years in the fifties. Shirley Caesar left the Caravans for a solo career in 1966, within months followed by most other members. Albertina Walker recruited new singers, including Loleatta Holloway, but by the end of the decade Walker officially disbanded the Caravans.
But in fact Walker never really called it a day. From time to time there were reunion concerts with many former members joining the party. And Walker recorded sporadically through the seventies, singing solo after decades. Her first solo album in the seventies was "Put A Little Love In Your Heart" (HOB LP 2124).
"Crying In The Streets" was originally released as a secular song by George Perkins in the late sixties. There are at least two gospelised versions of this song. The other one is by The Seven Brothers and can be found at Karl Tsigdinos & John Glassburner The Soul of Gospel, The Gospel of Soul.
