White Singers - When He Spoke
White Singers - When He Spoke

The White Singers are a mother and daughter duo consisting of Justenor White (mother) and Shirley Brown (daughter). I'm 99 1/2 % positive that this Shirley Brown is THE "Woman To Woman" Shirley Brown. She was born in West Memphis. She moved to St. Louis at the age of nine. As as young adult she sang with local R&B stars including Oliver Sain, Little Milton and Albert King. It was Sain who got her record deal at the Nashville based Nashboro subsidiary A-Bet. After that Albert King brought her to Stax in the spring of 1974. Her debut at Stax was "Woman To Woman" the first number one in the R&B charts for Stax in a long time.
Somewhere around the time of her A-bet recording (early seventies) together with her mother she recorded for Champ, another Nashville based label. Champ owner Jim Stanton, like his neighbour Hoyt Sullivan of HSE, had a very prolific roster of artists with a lot of one offs. There are a few artists who had releases on both labels. Champ had a recording sudio, something HSE didn't have. As a result many HSE recordings were made in the Champ studio. Although far from complete I've added earlier on this week a Champ Discography to the website. Additions and corrections are highly appreciated!!!
I've loved this recording for a long time without having any idea it was THAT Shirley Brown. Verrrrrrrry interesting!

Very interesting indeed.
I wonder whether she made any more recordings for Champ. The discography on the website is far from complete, so their might be another 45 with Shirley Brown on Champ. There are also more recordings by groups named 'The White Singers'. Is she or is she not a member of those groups?
