Sax Kari On The Gospel Highway

Walter Ponder - Little Church In The Ghetto

Over at Soul Detective Red Kelly and his bunch of fellow soul detectives (including your humble servant) are doing some serious research into the careers of some of the more obscure soul artists. In case four: Charles "Soul" Brown the name of Sax Kari is turning up rather often. What wasn't noticed so far is that Sax Kari was involved with gospel music during the 1970s at TK gospel subsidiary Gospel Roots.
Sax Kari was the engineer on Walter Ponder's "Thunderbolt Of The South" (Gospel Roots LP 5037) album from 1979. The album is produced by (former) lead of the Dixie Hummingbirds Ira Tucker. Personally I have the opinon that Ira Tucker's name is on the album (and on several other Gospel Roots releases) for marketing reasons only and that the real producer of this album is Sax Kari.
"Little Church In The Ghetto" is written by Sax Kari.
Other recordings by Walter Ponder are Your Perfect Love\A Change Is Gonna Come (Coast To Coast 111) and the album Let The Church Roll On (Diamond Jubilee 300). Both are believed to be recorded in the 1980s.
There was a group named the Ponder Brothers who had two releases on the Hoyt Sullivan owned labels HSE (453) and Su-Ann(782). I don't know whether Walter was one of the brothers, or not.
