Mount Pleasant Choir - I Woke Up This Morning
Mt. Pleasant Choir - I Woke Up This Morning
In the previous entry about Sammie Cheatam we mentioned that he was member of the Mount Pleasant Choir for a period of time. Cheatam's name cannot be found on the cover of the Mount Pleasant Choir album "The Best Of the Mt. Pleasant Choir" (Memorial LP 519). The only names on the cover are: Dorothy Starks (director and soloist), Robert Randolph (booking agent and soloist), Willie Downs (president), William Crawford (lead guitar), Wlater Williams (bass guitar), and Walter Thomas (drums).
"The Best Of" is their only release on Memorial, and so far I haven't found any other releases by the Mt. Pleasant Choir.
The Mount Pleasant Choir was organized in 1964 and has been active in the southern states of the USA. In 1976 at the time of the recording of this album The Mt. Pleasant Choir appeared every sunday morning at a local tv station in Augsta.

Praise God.
I am the nephew of Dorothy Starks. She was a great singer and musician. I had the opportunity to play for the Mount Pleasant Choir in the Late 80's and I will never forget it. The Mount Pleasant Choir lived in Augusta Georgia. Their lead guitar player William "pee Wee" Crawford was also a long time musician for the Swannee Quintet of Augusta Georgia. They recorded over seven records and/or albums. They recorded at least 3 albums for Memorial Records. Dorothy's son (Bonnie)who also played organ on many of their records is still living and has a wealth of information on this gospel group. Thanks for keeping their music alive. I studied her piano style and still pay tribute to her during my concerts. She along with The Mount Pleasant Chior were a wonderful group of Christian people.

- Hide Between The Mountain / ???? (Memorial 45: 32)
All information will be highly aprreciated.
All the best,

I am the great granddaughter or Ms. Starks (Micolettillisa Jackson) and the little girl who used to sing with her at the young age of 4. She was a wonderful artist and a wonderful person she still lives on in my heart.
