Mississippi Nightingales - Don't Let Him Ride

Mississippi Nightingales - Don't Let Him Ride

It's that time of the year again when we all start thinking about what to give and what to ask for Christmas. A very good CD, if not excellent CD, for those who like raw undiluted stripped-down gospel is Fire In My Bones. It's released by the Thompkins Square Label. Three CDs with in total 80 post WWII gospel songs you can't go wrong. Most of the songs have never been released on CD before. Unlike most gospel CD reissues and unlike what we do here most of the time at Just Moving On, the compilers haven't focused on quartets or the (very) large choirs. The focus is more on the on the 'sanctified blues' tradition, field recordings, congregational recordings and roaring sermons.
In the words of Mike McConigal the Fire In My Bones compiler:
"Fire In My Bones provides a small peek at the incredible diversity and power of post-war black gospel. Much of this music is raw, distortedand might sound a bit strange. But it is not presented as a noveltyfreak show or as “outsider music.” This is gospel-which we must always remember translates as “the good news”-as it has been sung and performed in tiny churches and large programs, from rural Georgia to urban Los Angeles. It is clearly among the most vibrant, playful, beautiful and emotionally charged music in the world".
One of the quartet recordings on Fire In My Bones is "Don't Let Him Ride" by the Mississippi Nightingales. The song comes from a 45 they released at the Memphis based Home Boy's label. The Mississipe Nightingales also had an album released on HSE
